December 3.

Hello from Tarpon Springs.  It’s been a stretch, again, in between updates.  Much, much, much thanks though to Rachel Doran for offering her computer, as well as the other comforts of a home, to us- letting us freshen up, clean our boats, and get ready for the next section.

We’ve paddled some very interesting waterways since Naples.  When we first began paddling into southwest Florida, I have to admit I was not enjoying it.  The scenery was great, but none of the boaters passing by waved, and even fewer bothered to slow down.  Most would just stare as they flew by us.  When we pulled on to the shore, the people were rarely friendly.  It’s an odd feeling when you are coming into towns.  You feel unwelcome.  Alone.  Granted, with our appearance after days on the water, I’m sure we aren’t very approachable.  Well, me maybe, unshaven and probably smelly…  Jodi doesn’t have the same problem.  I was feeling very snubbed.

It’s amazing though how one flower can brighten an entire field.  We have been introduced to some incredible, friendly people throughout south Florida, and I have enjoyed more and more meeting the people who live in this area, and enjoy being on the water.  I have a list of people to thank.

From the beginning, thanks to Nancy Macphee, Ben, Paul and Catherine at San Carlos RV Park.  You took us in from the cold, gave us a place to sleep, running water, a delicious breakfast and trip to the supermarket.  Thank you for the evening conversation, the helpful tips, and the warm hospitality.  Next it was Barry and Kathy Stevens at Cayo Costa State Park.  Your conversation gave me a lot to think about for the future and what comes next.  You let us explore the park, and make it a home.  We felt welcomed and at ease, and hope to meet up again in the future.  Thank you!

I’d like to extend a thanks to Rachel Doran, and Hank Brooks, as well.  Thanks for your hospitality, dinner, and a conversation.  It’s wonderful to feel welcomed like family so close to the holidays.  You have given us a terrific boost of confidence, and excitement to continue.

The segments of the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail through Southwest Florida have some beautiful, contrasting sections.  We have made many memories, and I hope to write them all out, in the future (when I have more time).

Until the next time… which will hopefully be soon!
